“I Am an Amanuensis” 73: David Eagleman

“Well, it turns out that you are not one thing. Your brain is made up of lots of competing sub-populations. The right way to think about the brain is [that it’s] like a neural parliament with different political parties that are battling it out to steer the ship of state.” David Eagleman discussing his book Incognito: The Secret Lives of the Brain with Stephen Colbert on The Colbert Report (the quote starts at 4:55). Sounds like someone’s been reading my comics! Amanuensis –noun.  A person employed to write what another dictates or to copy what has been written by another.

A HardPressed Disquiet

I am proud to say that Marc Weidenbaum asked me to be the 16th illustrator for his blog Disquiet’s “Sketches of Sound” series, in which he asks cartoonists and illustrators to draw a sound-related object. Previous artists include Brian Biggs, Dylan Horrocks, Megan Kelso, Darko Macan, and Justin Orr, so I’m in good company. Here’s my piece: I first met Marc in New Orleans as I was traveling cross country in the summer of 2002, where he was kind enough to let some friends and I watch the Lennox Lewis / Mike Tyson fight on Pay-Per-View at his house. Marc…

Happy Birthday, Professor Booty

A half-birthday card for my buddy Phil. Apologies to The Beastie Boys. Speaking of the Beasties, love that new track, “Don’t Play No Game that I Can’t Win.”

The Fat Panda

A friend recently Googled the words “Panda” and “Natomas,” and surprisingly enough, a picture of me came up in the first page of image results: He tried some other random searches containing the word “panda” and I kept coming up. This appears to have been a one-day phenomenon restricted to his computer because I no longer come up so quickly (not even if you search for “Panda” and “Jesse.” You have to add “Baggs” to find the photo of me). Still, this friend owns a panda suit, and we were able to recreate the PhotoShopped comparison of Po and myself…

California State Fair Gets HardPressed

The newsstand I recently painted for the Sacramento News and Review will be used to distribute papers to attendees of this year’s California State Fair. I don’t know if Cal Expo will become its permanent home, but I’m very excited to have my newsstand at the Fair, especially since there were almost 730,000 attendees last year (pdf), an average of close to 40,000 people a day! So if you visit the fair, look for this box!

“Congressional Caffeine Caucus Catastrophe!” Complete

When I upgraded the blog recently the permalinks for all my blogg entries were changed, meaning any links in my blogg to anything else in my blogg no longer work. Rather than fixing them, here’s all six parts of Congressional Caffeine Caucus Catastrophe! in one place, which was probably something I should have done a while ago anyway.

With Club Sauce

Some wily Internet genius has come upon the hilarious idea of taking classic quotes from Arrested Development and applying them to Game of Thrones. You’ll need to be familiar with at least Arrested Development to get the jokes, but if you’ve seen both shows you’ll be surprised at the number of similarities. Case in point: Visit ArrestedWesteros.com for more lulz.
